Whatsapp web/app is a common social media app that sends messages, pictures, videos, music and other types of files or content via the internet.

How to use Whatsapp on a computer using the desktop app

This method is suitable for people who have a recurrent need to check their app via their laptop or desktop.

To use the app on your desktop or laptop follow the steps below:

  1. Visit the WhatsApp download page and download the app.
  2. After the Whatsapp download, the next action is WhatsApp install, follow the prompts to complete the installation then open the app.
  3. You will see the QR code on your computer screen.
  4. Scan the QR code with your phone camera via the steps below;

For Android devices

  • Open the app on your phone.
  • Tap on the menu or the three vertical dots icon.
  • Tap on the link to a device, then follow the prompts to complete the process.

For iPhones

  • Open the app on your iPhone

How to use WhatsApp on a computer via WhatsApp web

This is suitable for individuals who seldom use their laptops or desktop.

To access the app via your browser follow the steps below

  1. Visit web.whatsapp.com
  2. To stay signed in remember to check the keep me signed in.
  3. Open the app on your device
  4. If you are using an Android device, tap on the three dots menu or icon in the right top corner, for iPhone tap on setting in the bottom right-hand corner of the iPhone screen.
  5. Tap on Whatsapp Web on your phone app
  6. Navigate down and tap on the scan QR code.
  7. Use your phone to scan the QR code on the WhatsApp web webpage.

Limitations of using Whatsapp web or desktop app

The use of the app on laptops or desktops has some limitations because Whatsapp was originally designed for use on phones.

These limitations include the following:

  • You cannot access Whatsapp on a laptop or desktop if your phone is not connected to the internet. However, with the recent Whatsapp update, you can now use WhatsApp on a PC even if your phone has no internet connection.
  • You cannot make voice or video calls. However, you can make group video calls on Whatsapp web through the Messenger Room.
  • The Whatsapp Messenger rooms feature is not end-to-end encrypted.
  • Whatsapp web is not compatible with all browsers except Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Microsoft Edge, and Safari (macOS 10.8 and above only).
  • You cannot delete messages on WhatsApp or the desktop app if your phone or primary device is an iPhone.
