HOW TO APPLY FOR A NIGERIAN INTERNATIONAL PASSPORT

The Nigerian international passport is a booklet-based document issued to Nigerian citizens to enable them to engage in international travel.

Requirements for Nigerian international passport

The Nigerian international passports are of two broad types namely; Standard and official Nigerian international passports.

The standard Nigerian international passports (green cover) are for ordinary Nigerian citizens, while the official (blue cover) is specifically for government officials and Nigerian diplomats.

The requirements for international passports differ according to the type and age of the applicant.

The requirements to apply for Nigerian international passports are as follows:

Nigerian international passport requirements for Minors (applicants less than 18 years)

  • Completed Nigerian passport application form
  • One passport-size photograph [signed on the reverse side by consenting parent(s)]
  • Birth certificate
  • Evidence of Nigerian citizenship of parent(s)
  • Letter of consent from both parents (valid court order if one parent is unavailable)
  • Proof of payment
  • National Identification Number (NIN)
  • Court Order and letter of approval from the State Ministry of Women and Child Development ( For adopted children only)

Nigerian international passport requirements for Adults (applicants 18 years and above)

  • Completed Nigerian passport application form
  • Two recent passport-size photographs
  • Proof of payment
  • Letter of ID from local government/ state of origin (valid staff ID card attached)
  • Birth certificate
  • Completed Passport Guarantor’s form (with a photocopy of the data page of the Guarantor’s Nigerian international passport and one passport-size photograph of the Guarantor)
  • Marriage certificate where applicable
  • Name change affidavit where applicable
  • Police report in case of lost passport

Requirements for official Nigerian international passport

In addition to the above requirements for standard passports, the following are needed for an official international passport.

  • Letter of introduction from appropriate State Government, Federal Government Ministry / Organization
  • Letter of appointment / last promotion

How to apply for a Nigerian international passport

The application can be done online or offline at any of the Nigerian immigration service offices. The applicant should have all the above-stated requirements ready.

To apply online follow the steps below:

Step 1: Visit the Nigerian immigration Service portal

Step 2: Select the type of passport

Step 3: Select the processing country. This is the country you wish to apply to and collect the international passport from.

Step 4: Fill out the application form correctly. Check the box “for I accept full responsibility for the information provided in this form”. then click on “print” to print the form.

Step 5: Scan and upload the required documents. The required should be uploaded in pdf format.

Step 6: Proceed to online payment. Select your preferred payment option and currency from the option provided. Click the “pay in Naria” or “pay in dollar option”.

Payment can be done online or at the bank. Applicants who paid at the bank must be issued an ‘approved payment platform provider’ receipt that contains a “Validation Number”.

The amount to be paid will depend on the type of booklet you are paying for; 32 or 64-page booklet.

The pay-in-dollar option is mainly for applicants paying from outside Nigeria.

Step 7: After successful completion of the above step click on “submit”.

Step 8: Your application ID, reference number and validation number (for online payment) will be generated, then proceed to the Nigerian immigration service portal for confirmation of payment.

Step 9: First-time applicants should fill out and print out the passport Guarantors form. You will need your application ID and reference number to fill out the passport Guarantors form. Click on “submit” when you are done to proceed.

Step 10: Visit the Nigerian Immigration service office to submit the completed application form and also for biometric capture.

To apply for an international passport from Nigeria offline, visit any of the Nigerian immigration service offices with all the required documents to physically process and collect your international passport.

Nigerian citizens living abroad can apply for their international passports at the nearest Nigerian consulate or through an online application.
